Tuxedo cats are those awesome felines who have stark black and white markings resembling men’s formal wear. No other cat is as dramatic as a tuxie dressed in his bib and tucker. Some tuxies wear spats or white boots. They are truly the gentlemen of the cat color patterns. There are also female tuxedo cats who have the same wonderful marking plus the distinctive personality traits.
These felines with their formal wear coloring, are the only cats admitted into the Metropolitan Opera, and have been the themes of awesome musicals. Tuxedo cats were the cats of choice kept by William Shakespeare, Beethoven, and Sir Isaac Newton.
These illustrious gentlemen knew that these clever little trouble-makers with their unerring sense of mischief and loving nature, were the perfect companions and muses for creativity.
Watch for Mr. Mistoffeles in “Cats.” He is one of the most famous tuxedo-clad kitties. And of course, Sylvester the Cat and Felix of cartoon fame also wore tuxes. And if you were to peruse pictures of the Clinton White House, you will see Socks, who wore a tux and sat quietly under chairs during formal dinners.
Genetically tuxies are piebald or bi-colored cats. They are black with white patches on their paws, chest, throat, belly, and chin. You may also find tuxies sporting white faces along with their distinctive bow tie. If you own a tuxie, you will declare to the world that your pet is even-tempered, affectionate and very intelligent. They also are the boss of the house.
People often ask “is a tuxedo cat a breed?” To find out read our in-depth article A Tribute to Tuxedo Cats
Let’s face it, tuxies are dressed to the nines all the time. They don’t care what you look like; they just know they are always looking sharp. In fact, most love to have their pictures taken and are extremely photogenic.
Tuxedo cats have their own distinct personalities. They claim areas of the house for their own and will often drag a blanket and toys to their special spot. They are spunky, care for their owners, and are very affectionate.
Following are 9 compelling reasons to own a tuxie, if you don’t already:
#1. Tuxedo cats are extremely intelligent
Some say they are more intelligent than regular cats. There may be an intelligence difference of as much as 200% between a tuxedo and a regular cat. A 200% intelligence margin is a statistic thrown around by tuxedo cat owners. How can you doubt the intelligence of a tuxedo cat? The tuxedo cat has ruled the Kit-Cat Clock Company for 81 years. This beloved keeper of time, has graced homes. Now this classy tuxie had both intelligence and staying power.
Their intelligence makes them born leaders. In the 2012 election season a tuxie named Tuxedo Stan campaigned for mayor of Halifax, Canada. Stan was a visible champion of Halifax’s stray cat problem and advocated a city-sponsored spay/neuter and cat care program to help his constituents.
#2. Tuxedo cats have several remarkable traits
They become invisible on the vernal or diurnal equinox. They often have open eyes at birth. They are the best swimmers in the cat family, even though they hate water.
Give your tuxedo cat a mathematical problem, single digits only, please, and they will tap out the answers. Did you know your tuxedo cat can see infrared light?
#3. Tuxies have unique genes giving them that distinctive bi-colored look
You can also see cats of other coloring, not just black and white, who have tuxedo markings. However, according to tuxie owners, these different colored tux cats are somewhat inferior.
Their cool coat patterns come from the gene for white spotting that is dominant and dramatically masks the cat’s true color in the areas where white happens. If you happen to find a tuxedo cat that sports a black patch on a white chest these cats are black tie cats. They are very lucky and will bring you wealth and amusement.
Tuxedo kittens are among the most adorable pets on the face of the earth. They are friendly and outgoing and tend to wander less than other kittens. This breed is very laid-back. The Tuxie kitten is a miniature adult. They already have the marking of their adulthood. Take a Tuxedo kitten to the theater; you will be the talk of the event.
#4. Like all black cats, they were once worshiped in ancient Egypt
If you owned a black cat with tuxedo markings, you had tremendous luck and were sought after for special ceremonies.
Do understand that you don’t really own a tuxedo cat; they own you!
#5. Tuxies are Jellicle cats
Jellicle cats come from the T.S. Elliot poem “The Song of the Jellicles” and is also a popular the Broadway musical “Cats” based on Mr. Elliot’s book.
Jellicles can come in all different colors, but the most awesome of these Jellicle cats is the tuxedo.
#6. Tuxedo cats always match perfectly with your décor or clothing
Black and white are the perfect complementary colors. With a tuxedo cat on your lap, you will be considered the height of fashion.
These types of cats make you look elegant. Choose a tuxie that will complement your personality and see your friends flock to your home just to bask in the ambiance.
#7. Tuxies are uber cuddly and love to nestle in your favorite sweater
Tuxedos particularly love to snuggle up in anything cashmere…so be sure to purchase a sweater that is cashmere to keep her happy.
Now who wouldn’t want to cuddle this beauty?
#8. Tuxedo cats are deep thinkers
Perhaps they ponder deep philosophic questions. Cat owners often imagine that their Tuxedo cats love to write poetry and dramatic novels in their heads.
Have you ever seen a tuxedo sleeping in the sun? His tail twitches and his eyes blink. Yes, he is probably writing a poem.
#9. Tuxedo cats are just plain good for your mental and physical health!
They provide endless snuggles when you are feeling blue. Cats tend to infuse you with kitty warmth, and their rumbly purrs are pure therapy. Their bedside manner is without match. Your tuxedo will not get annoyed with your whining when you are ill. They will cater to your sleeping whims and cuddle right up to you. They will listen to your complaints all day long; just don’t miss their mealtimes. They really don’t like sneezes and coughs. They are highly protective of their own immune systems, and will run away if you are having a sneezing or coughing fit.
Tuxedo kitties have a special language to communicate between themselves. Perhaps it is based on body language or telepathy. Their brains are smaller than ours, but these little brains are packed full of intelligence and mischief.
Shower your tuxies with love and attention, and they will more than return the favor!
Nothing looks sharper than a tuxie – except me in my tux! 🙂
I love my Tuxie, he is my best friend, unconditional love. He is so smart he talks to me when I ask him questions! He is the best!
same
I recently was given a Tuxie!!! I fell in love with him in no time at all!!! He is sooo smart, & just licks like a doggy!! He is hilarious!! I didn’t know this? But I read that they are considered very lucky, & that apparently several lottery winners have Tuxedo cats! Who knew? Lolol I just know that Inam going to buy more lottery tickets! I named him, Finley. It seems to fit him very well. The person who gave him to me didn’t know much about his past? But, he is young, & has never met a stranger? When someone comes to my house, he goes right up to them, & stands up on their leg and stretches his little arms up on them!!! He has brought me a lot of joy😊😊❤️❤️ Ps: if anyone who has one, & they win the lottery? Let me know? Lol
WE HAVE THREE OF THE BLACK & WHITE TUXEDO CATS.THEY TRULY ARE OUR FURRY FAMILY MEMBERS.THEY ALL HAVE THERE OWN PERSONALITIES,BUT THAT DOESN’T STOP THEM FROM BEING AS CLOSE AS THEY CAN WITH EACHOTHER OFTEN.THEY LOVE TO WRAP BOTH PAWS AROUND THE OTHER ONES NECK WHILE HOLDING THEM IN PLACE THEY WILL CONTINUE TO CLEAN THE OTHER ONE OVER & OVER.THERE NAMES ARE;(MOMMA BOOTS/VERY PROUD”BROTHER”/&EVER SO SNUGGLING AND LOVING”SISTER”…..(2019)
We used to have 2 tuxedo cats, one boy & one girl, their names were Oreo(girl) & Shadow (boy) . We acquired Oreo when she was left behind when her owners moved away. Before we adopted her we had her checked out .Found out she was 8-9 years old, fixed &declawed 🤬. How can someone just abandon a cat who has no claws to defend & hunt for themselves? I caved in & decided to feed her, she was so smart & sweet 🤗. I despise when people declaw their cats! She lived to be over 20 years old!
We just got a tuxedo cat for my daughter, she named home Shadow!! 💕
Ikr! I named my tux meowy don’t judge I was little,😅 I have about a million names for him but one is tux deluxe I just couldn’t imagine life without my little tux but he’s VERY vocal 😑
My tuxie name iz domino. He have even white bow tie, lined up goldtee, white boots, n a black patch on his left hind leg n belly. It resembles blank/ace n the game dominos.
No way!!! Thats my cats name . I call him Dom he thinks hes hard as nails like a cat gangster i should have called him michael corleone
OwO
When a black and white tuxedo cat mates with a different kind of cat, you get some tuxedo cats of a different color: orange and white, calico and white, cream and white, tortoiseshell and white, and sometimes their colored coat has stripes or blocks or spots instead of a solid color. They are all adorable.
I have a young tuxedo cat and what a joy he is!! Very bright, loving, sweet, playful, and so darn cute!! My family comes over just to watch him play. He is so interactive! He plays with toy rats. He loves to hid them and bring them to me to throw for him. He will fetch as long as you will throw. So cute walking with his play rat in his mouth. I have several videos of him doing this. He was a rescue car and I hitbtge jack pot when I rescued him.
Hi,
I wanted to respond to your story about your tuxie! I too have a tuxedo cat rescued from a shelter. He is the most adorable, playful, loving, friendly and smart cat I have ever had and I have had my share of kitties over the years ‘cuz I’m a 69 yr old cat lover for sure. I kept thinking “There must be something written about black and white cats on the Web.” Sure enough, I found all of this info about tuxedo cats! I had no idea what I had in terms of a cat but I knew he was “different” in a most positive way. We recently lost our favorite cat mate to cancer and it was a devastating experience all the way to the very end. I thought I would never find another kitty that could fill my Ralphie Boy’s shoes but I see now I have found that very kind of cat God knew I needed! He is smart as he can be! He opens doors that are almost closed. He is the most playful, interactive cat ever! In his cage where I got him, there were lots of toys. He would play with them without being played with. Now, it is second nature for him to play with all his toys here and still likes to sleep with them on our bed! He loves to knock things down off the desk, the counter tops, the dressers, the computer table, wherever something is not nailed down. He is the lap cat of the house. He “talks” to us a lot. He greets us with loud meows and even comes inside every few hours during the day to just say hello to me. He is so affectionate, sleeps on the bed with us, and wants to play all the time until he finally has to take his “cat nap.” I love him so much. He is just “what the doctor ordered” to help us get through our grieving the loss of Ralphie. Like you said he is a very “interactive” cat. My husband plays with the two cats in the yard and they run
together, jumping up high to catch the “flying bird.” He (Harley) is very considerate with my other somewhat aloof calico cat called Ginger who was also a rescue kitty.. When we have to board them, I have them board together in the same crate and he grooms her and lets her snuggle up to him so she is not so afraid. He (Harley) is very creative, too. Anything can become a play toy in his mind! I plan to continue learning and observing his adorable ways! Thank you for your comments! Now, I know that my suspicions about his uniqueness are born out y yours as well as others’ comments!

And Mary, I had to respond to your story. I’m a cat lover and have had many through the years – most from shelters, but a few “found,” and giveaways from friends who could no longer keep them. But surprisingly, never a tuxedo cat. We recently lost our beloved 14 year-old silver tabby who was very special. Through the years the loss of any kitty has always been hard; but this one cut especially deep. I knew an eventual replacement would help me heal although I doubted I’d ever find another of his caliber. But fate had other plans. A tuxedo kitten at a local rescue adoption event drew me in. And I adopted him, weeping in public the entire time with both happiness and sadness at the memories of Magic and the thought of trying to replace him. His given name was Sundance and, after just a few days, I knew it was destined and I had to keep the name. “Sunny” truly brought sunshine into our house and danced his way into my heart.
I was awestruck when, after bringing him home and letting him exuberantly explore his new home, without a qualm he curled up behind my back in the computer chair, and went to sleep. Out of all the myriad of places in this two story house, the place he chose happened to be Magic’s personal and peculiar spot to nap. The first of many signs, I felt this telling me, “It was meant to be.” I won’t expand upon the list of “tuxedo traits” Sunny embodies. But he is an observant and intelligent, mischievous little imp; a flamboyantly daring juggernaut of comical energy; and a sweet and affectionate cuddle-monster who has firmly attached himself to my heart. He was bottle-raised by a veterinarian and she somewhat sheepishly described him as “a little clingy.” And then added, “But I think that’s just what you need right now.” And she was right. I didn’t rescue Sunny – he rescued me. And I like to think there’s a little bit of Magic’s spirit in him, and that Magic would definitely approve of this little one growing into his toe prints.

This made me cry. Thank you for sharing your story. I have a little calm cuddle monster tuxedo I just adopted from the animal shelter and I love him so much.
You guys have no idea how much I need to hear this right now. I just lost my Tuxedo to cancer. I’ve literally broken down and cried every day from 3 months out from the day we have her back to God. And I’ve cried every day as a broken man every day since. Which was a month and a half ago. Because her cancer was in her mouth on the left side, I fed her soft food that I made myself through a syringe 3 to 4 times a day. I had her and have all my cats insured and I’ll tell you it was a blessing. She was given 3 to 4 months and she lived 9. She cuddled and was more affectionate than anything I’ve ever experienced. I already loved her unconditionally but the bond we had at the end was something I’m afraid I’ll never find again. Honestly I don’t want to have one exactly like that again. I want to Keep ours speciAl. The day we took her in to get out to rest was a day we decided and I can honestly say I believe it was her only day she felt any pain. I read a poem that I wrote for her called “HER PURR AGAINST MY HEART” when we were allowed time alone. After the own 9 my wife looked to me and said honey she’s purring so loud. I knew it was time. She was ready. The vet came in and I told my wife if she wants she can put her hand on her chest and I’ll put mine on her back as she passed so we could feel her purr. The vet gave her the first sedative and asleep she went, still purring. Then she gave her the final injection and the vet checked for a pulse and she was gone. But in that moment something happened that took all my anger at God away. After her heart stopped beating she left out two more purrs. The vet told us it’s very common for them to breath out any extra air after the heart stops, but she also said she’s never seen a cat purr after. We left feeling very peaceful. But still the pain of losing her head been something one nerve felt before. I’ve never lost anyone or anything close to me. Not like this. I took off work to take care of her. Every drop off water, every ounce of food was fed to her by me. And I loved it. I miss our bond, our trust, the loss she would give me letting me know that she loved me too. No one freaky understands except my wife cause she saw how close we became. I feel like when I’m ready I know that kind of cat im getting will be.
HER PURR AGAINST MY HEART
Today I’m willing to give back,
What once was blessed to me,
I want God to take her pain away,
but leave us with our memories.
At times I held her extra close, never wanting to be apart,
Because it brought my favorite feeling, her purr against my heart.
I’ll miss every day your gone, your always a big part,
Of why I am always happy, even when the days are hard.
I’ll miss your trust and the things about you that make u different from others cats.
Letting me pick your nose, and get your eye boogers and weird things like that.
U Let me hold your paws,
give u a butt message,
And sometimes in the morning I’ll catch your stare
At me dreaming, but when I wake it’s my favorite moment we share.
I don’t want to let u go,
I still say it’s not fair
I can’t imagine waking up without my Rajah bear.
Just promise me when you leave your body, we’ll never be far apart,
Cause the one thing I can’t go without is you purring on my heart.
Aww . I feel you man Cats are love . I hope you get another cat and she will love you the most … Hooman .I pray that the cats loves you the same way the older one did. Much loveee
I lost my own tuxedo cat three days ago to cancer. He was so strong and brave my mom and I had no idea he was sick until he stopped being able to go to the bathroom. We took him to the vet on October 30th, and found out he had cancer in the bladder and it had spread to his lungs. He died two days later. The brave little soul waited until we knew he was sick to move on. I wish I was there for him at the end, because he was always there for us every day to brighten up our day. He was the smartest, sweetest and most mischievous cat we’ll ever have, and we’ll always miss him. So, I know what you’re going through.
Thanks for this post Jake. It was a comfort for me to read about your love for your pet and the way you cared for her. Many yrs ago as a child I once had a Tux cat , the experience was like having a little brother to literally grow up with, for 12 yrs. he played an important role making my childhood a mostly pleasant time. I recently lost a young feral cat that I hoped to bring into my home for a pet. After a year of interacting and bonding with her she disappeared. They are a wonderful work of creation. Thanks again.
Jake, with tears running down my face, I want to say “me too’. My rescue, runt of the abandoned litter, precious Zach, gray and white tuxedo, 5 years old , crossed the bridge in my arms, that sadness is there forever. Eight months later God led me to a shelter and there I found my new love, Tobie, my black and white Tuxie. He’s 4 years old, a surrender, elderly owners, one passed and the other went into assisted living. God led me, I know, to share my 65 year old heart and endless love with their sweet baby boy. Tobie is unique and I’m loving every moment of our new life together. Kitty, a rescue, Zach and Tobie are true gifts from God, and I’m so blessed to feel the joy of a special cat in my life again. Thank you, Jake, for sharing your heart. God bless us all.
I lost my beloved 16-year-old tuxedo cat Ajax to mouth cancer on 7/24/18, over 4 months after he was diagnosed with oral cancer. It was so invasive that in the end he couldn’t even drink water. He was with me as my soulmate, my best friend who loved me unconditionally, for 15 years. I am still sobbing daily.
Jake, you’ve said it all!… I cannot add anything to the “miracle of Love” of love you’ve expressed.
Indeed, as I experience more years of living it is continually affirmed to me that the greatest gift of life is Love. It is a divine alchemy.
So thank you Jake for sharing your experience and thank you for your great poem, it is so very touching, true and beautiful.
Jake, I came to this site because someone I know is misinformed that a Tuxedo cat is a breed. There is something about the coloration that gives these cats unique traits that seem to be common to their bicolouration…however the colouration happens in many purebred and non-purebred cats, and is in fact the colour of 75% of cats the world over. (Did you know that only Tuxedo cats’ eyes reflect blue/turquoise in nightshine?)
What I found was your beautiful, heartfelt story of your Rajah Bear. Like many of the other commenters here, I lost my favorite soul on this planet… The one being that shared all of his love and connection and time with me— which over the 17 years since I rescued him as a 5 week old kitten, expected not to live as he wouldn’t eat & wouldn’t clean himself, he more than lived. He thrived. Everyone who
met him knew he was special. From the language that we shared which was obvious to anyone a 2-way communication, to the “tricks” (I call them Favours) he did for me that were to many unbelievable until witnessed first hand, to the outgoing & friendly way he greeted everyone who came over. I am honored and grateful to have been his Beloved, as he was mine— for more time than I have (or ever will, I’m sure) spend with any other soul.
Gargamel was black, as all my adopted cats have been— except for two Bengals that I rescued and two Tuxedo cats. And he reluctantly left my side physically 2 weeks ago, at midnight on February 5, 2019. I may never cease to grieve the loss of my Familiar and Soulmate in that form. But I believe he will come back to me in another form. And I will know him when I see him.
He too was purring at the final injection, as I held his head in my hand and sang one of our songs to him after spending four hours at the vet’s, telling him stories of our life together. A young vet tech checked in on us every 40 minutes, and stayed each time for awhile to hear the stories. I am grateful she recognized our bond and his unique personality and spirit.
Thank you for sharing your story and your beautiful poem.
i just read your sad story. Tuxies have the most affectionate personalities. I have to say they really love you so deeply. About six yours age I hd to put my boy Mustached sown. He had gotten very sick very fast. he was 18 years of age and I had him from 6 weeks old. The vet said that he would be on dialysis I’m sorry for my spelling. She said she felt that it might not help him and he was 18 yrs of age. I took him home. I just could do it. That night he was losing so much water and down to 4 lbs. He was always primping himself. I use to ask him if he was going out on a dat. I could see him like this full of cat urine. I cleaning him so many times but it was enough. The next day I brought him back to the vet. She said we will give him a shot to just make him rest easily. Has he lay on my lap he got more relaxed. I could feel his body just feeling more relaxed and more relaxed. When they called me to come in with him he just looked up at me an got the strength to put his paw right on my heart. I lost it. it took me 6 months to adopt another tuxie. That’s a whole other story. He’s a dreamboat.
Oh Honey I feel your pain. I too had a very beloved cat. Was a silver striped tabby w/some misplaced orange patches. She lived 19 years and had a cardiologist in the end. We waited 3 monthes. I thought I should get a puppy since no one could replace Mamas I too cried and cried while my son face timed from a cat adoption facility. Since I did want a “fresh start” I was leaning away from anything striped. When I saw this little black paw w/white mitten reach out of her cage at my son I asked for her to be “brought out”. We fell in love. Never knew much about tuxedo cats but she is a wild little love. Very vocal I’m very excited to see her grow up She divides her snuggling between our whole family. My husband was against the idea and swore he would not pay for anything to do with her. She melted his heart the first half hour. She scales furniture with ease and very curious. If you don’t fall in love with these precious cats you have no heart !!!!! They are a little rough when they play but give you twice the love. Just thrilled to have her. She was a rescue and her price had dropped as people don’t tend to buy them. But she was worth every penny !!
OMG I can so relate to this, I had to say goodbye to my little tortie after 18 wonderful years together, I grieved so badly that I vowed that I could not have any more pets when a beautiful tuxedo boy just marched into my lounge one day. He did a tour of the house and laid down, I checked for micro chip and owners for a couple of weeks but he decided he was staying with me. He has been with me for a year now and truly got into my heart, he is mischevious, very loving, highly intelligent and quirky beyond belief, we actually have real games of hide and seek!! I believe my dear little girl sent him to me.
What a great story,I just rescued a tuxedo kitten yesterday she is so cute but my 2 boy’s are not to happy right now they are brothers and very close.l really hope they will let her stay, cause l love her already
I am so sorry about your loss Mary in Atlanta..
Perfect man … I go to my friend’s house to watch the tuxedo play … They are the besttt
Omg!! I got a little rescue tuxie in June…. and I play fetch with him in the garden. I have a little foam ball that I throw for him and he brings it back for me to throw again and again. The first time it happened I couldn’t believe it!! He is the funniest, chattiest (he has to have the last word! ) and most playful cat I’ve ever encountered!
Our tux kitty Oreo loved playing with her soft foam little soccer ball! She would carry it around with her at night @ 1am or so. She was so sweet, she adored my hubby, when we first adopted her she wanted nothing to do with him. Fast forward a few months my hubby was her favorite human! As soon as he got home from home she was either on his lap or sitting next to him. She even like being carried like a baby! I love that my hubby loves cats as much as I do!
ADORBS
I know another tuxedo cat who was in Cats – Bustopher Jones!
I have never picked a cat, they have all picked me and ironically with one exception they have all been Tuxedos. Currently a family of 4 Tuxedos, Sammy, Charlie and Lacey and the babies of a feral kitty who adopted me who was also Tuxedo and whom I named “Mama”. I had Mama until she died from kidney failure about 3 years ago. I still think of her often and miss her. She turned into the perfect, loving house cat and she made sure she was at my house to give birth. The last family member, Bella, was a throw away kitty who is an absolutely beautiful tuxedo. She is tiny (6 lbs). She was begging for food at a mini-mart just before an expected snow storm and it was right next to railroad tracks. The first night I saw her I bought a can of food. The second night, I just had to take her more food. The third night was food and I grabbed her. I’ve had her ever since, 8 years now. The only exception was a beautiful Himalayan, Fat Boy. I loved him and was distraught when he died. I would have another Himalayan any time.
Don’t forget Mehitabel, Simons Cat, and that cynical French cat, Henri.
We have a little girl tuxedo kitten, her name is Buggie bcuz of her big eyes. She’s a pink nose tuxedo cat. Her patches are proportioned perfectly. She is funny and adorable, a blast to have around and yes she it very smart. I’m a proud owner of a pink nose tuxedo kitty cat. There is a cute story behind this. Reply to find out. You’ll love it!
Would love to hear your story!
I would love to hear the stiry
I would love to hear the story.
>I adored this article so much I read it 3vtimes so as not to miss a thing……I had the greatest pleasure of owning a most beautiful HANDSOME loving hunk of a Tux…quite by accident ..and might I say TREMENDOUS SURPRISE AND love was bestowed upon me…over a period of 7 years …..so deep & fulfilling that I still cry and have to stop what I’m doing to set down because of my LOVING ABLE-BODIED MARIO……INCLUDING HIS TAIL the first time I saw him he was 32 inches long & weighed 28 pounds…..my son is a Veterinarian and he was brought to him in kidney pain..illness his owner in crying mess because she had recently lost her job and partner and had no mone
y…to pay for his medical costs even tho my son gave her a discount and easy payment plans…..she signed him over to the clinic……he brought him to me in a doggie carrier..illness fell instantly in love…..he was very smart and without a doubt the the most loveable lap sitter and kiss face I ever had…..he did flips when he played!!!! All 28pounds of him
And did extremely well following that initial surgery…….we all loved him..he was most loving /loyal to me…I shall never ever get OVER HIM…….
I feel the same way about my tuxedo cat who I lost April1last Saturday his name was yingyang I will never get over him My family wants another cat but no other will replace him and I loved him so I’m sooo unhappy without my baby boy I got him when he was 3months rescued him from the the shelter had him for 11years just want the pain of loosing him to go away.yingyang is gone but not forgotten!
I have a “mask & mantle” Tuxedo kitten! We started calling the kitten “Tux”, even the vet agreed the kitty was a boy at 2 weeks old. Later, I realized I had not spotted the genetic features of a boy, as the kitten grew. So I looked closer. Yup! There was a “slit” not a round hole of a boy! So Tux became Tessa (Supernatural TV show). She is SO affectionate, always wanting to snuggle under my chin & on my face! She rubs her head under my hand with a “pet me” demand! She plays the “jitterbug” app on my iPad (high score over 500!). She has a deeper meow, she “trills” all the time! She gives kitty kisses all the time, & purrs easily. She loves to be carried & perches on my shoulder. She has white coloring at the corners of her eyes, & I see a dark reddish/brown discharge/tears. Does anyone know what that means & is there s way to remove it, to keep her whiteness prettier?!? Thanks!
Rena, truly mention it to the Vet just to make sure it is not an indication of something negative to the health.
You know, kittens are like all other babies, and therefore can have various ills that we have to just catch before they strengthen into a problem.
We recently adopted a tuxedo kitten a couple of days ago from our across-the-parking-lot neighbors. He is about 3 months old and omg he is adorable!! He was brought to us after the neighbors decided things just weren’t working out with the little guy. They only had him for like a week. We weren’t planning on adding another cat to our family so soon because one of our cats went missing only 2 weeks ago, but seriously, how could we say no? Anyway, we named him Stash and he is fitting right in. Our remaining cat is still trying to adjust, but that’s to be expected. She’ll come around. Stash has a great personality and loves to play. He’s very laid back and isn’t afraid of anything or anyone. If our current cat growls or hisses at him, he just calmly sits there staring at her. He doesn’t even flinch. Lol. I love him already. He’s a joy!
I bet Stash is thinking: “YO! I can’t believe your SOooo negative!, I’m fabulous and so is Life, Chill!
You just gotta give our relationship a chance!
And you’ll enjoy!
I have a nine year old tuxedo cat named Charlie who is the dumbest cat I have ever met.
I had to laugh at your remark because I have a five year old Tux that is also dumb–or maybe she just acts dumb…she won’t open a door that is slightly open, it would be too much trouble, but she will claw my velvet sofa to let me know she wants to go out. Her mother abandoned her during a hurricane because she was sick. There were two other babies that the mother came back for, but she left our cat. Now I see why!! She’s a devil and gets away with it. A beautiful cat, but she only does what SHE wants to do, She only sits in your lap if a storm is coming, but if you are working outside, she has to be right there by your side–usually right in the hole that you are putting your plant in. What a helper. Doesn’t matter how bad or unloving she is, she’s a keeper!
Do you love him?
Thank you all for sharing your wonderful Tuxie and various kitty stories! It has been a pleasure reading them and thinking about our newest rescue member of the family, George our 7 mo. old Tuxie. He, and our other rescue, Cricket (a 9 week old grey girl tabby) are best friend. George came into our lives, or I shoukd say RAN into our lives, unexpectedly a week after we had to put down our 14 year old Sheltie, Daisy Deux. Her best friend, Petey, our Maltepoo, was heartbroken and so sad. Lo and behold, one morning after daily Mass at church, a friend called me to a spot where a small kitten was holed up. She told me she had seen a tiny kitten terrifyingly running for his life down the sidewalk and had scooted into the crevice of a large electrical box. She was having a terrible time getting him as she could not bend down close enough
to him wih her hurt knee. Another friend was helping, but having a hard time
as Georgie was so frightened and hissing. He was only six weeks old.
I immediately grabbed a sweater, put my hand into a sleeve, and gently pulled George out. He was exhausted. My daughters were so happy we were taking him home. George is a hoot. He keeps us laughing at his antics with Cricket. Petey, our 11yr. old dog gets along very well with his two new feline friends. Our hearts are full again after our sad loss of our faithful, loyal, adorable, beautiful sable Sheltie Daisy…but somehow we think God sent us Georgie to comfort us. And he did! PS- George is now an 11 pound, neutered, big boy still growing like a weed. He looks and acts regal….a real cool cat ;D
Yes! Mommalee, ..Some Tuxie boys I’ve seen will sit tall, straight up!… in a royal pose like a Prince, very quiet as if they know they are royal and GAWD!…. they look it, in the Tuxedo garb that God fashioned them in, so elegant.
Its really a delightful sight to behold!
Great article, Tuxedo cats are the best without a doubt!
We LOVE our tuxedo boy! His name is Ezra and he is a year and a half old (2 in June). He’s so incredibly good looking and he’s a big boy! My husband and I couldn’t believe how huge he was when we picked him up as an 8-week-old kitten. He’s not necessarily overweight, but just very big boned and masculine. He has a very dog-like personality and he loves hanging out with our big dogs. Whenever he wants attention, he’ll either stand right up on you or grab you with his paws while you’re walking by. Unlike most cats, he LOVES his belly rubs and he won’t even try to bite you when he’s tired of them. He’ll just get up and either head bunt you or walk away. We’ve never had a cat with a personality like his!
Nicely written. I just saved a tuxedo from relatives. Unfortunately, neither of them were able to take care of the cat. So I jumped in. He is going to be 3 this year. He was always hiding from people. Until me. He knows my home is his home and he rules his domain. Only animal in the house. Now, he plays, is very vocal and cuddles. It took him a little time, but his personality is showing and he is very comfortable with me now. I can see he loves me. Been 10 yrs with any species in my home. And I can honestly say! He was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! His name is Nicólías.
I have a tuxedo female. I bought her from some girl but when i got her she was almost dead. She was in such bad shape that i almost didnt take her but my mom was a cat lover and i could almost hear her voice saying “don’t you leave that cat there”. Anyway i went on and bought her. She was just about 4 weeks old and was not weened like i was told. She was badly infested with fleas. I had to feed her from a dropper and it was rough getting her to eat. After she ate she was weak and just laid around almost lifeless. After 2 days i called a vet. They told me to look into her mouth and see if it was white which i already knew it was because i noticed it when i fed her, her gums and tongue was white and the vet said unfortunately she is probably not going to make it because she was so ate up with fleas that the sucked all of her blood and she had nothing left. I went and got some pedialyte and started mixing it in her kitten milk and her mouth started turning pink again and she got better and better each day. I’m so glad i took her and saved her. About a week or 2 later, i found out that the rest of siblings died. So sad. Anyway i named her mimi for miniature miracle because she was so tiny. Mimi is now 6 months old and very energetic. She loves to run and play but she is not very affectionate. She will briefly greet me when i get home and i do mean briefly, and everytime we try to pet her, she tries to bite us. I think she is trying to play with us but sometimes she bites or scratches and draws blood. Has anyone else experienced this with their cat? I will be getting her fixed soon and I’m hoping that helps calm her down some. I love her so much and i would love for her to be more affectionate and cuddle and love me back. Thanks for reading my story. If anyone has any suggestions, please reply. Thanks again
My cat Martin was a biter when we adopted him. He came from a shelter and he was very frightened. He bit me in the introduction room and also on the way home in the car. Later, out of the blue, he bit me on my side and I screamed. He was so startled by my outburst, I think he got it that maybe he shouldn’t bite and he hasn’t done it since. I say all of this because maybe she just needs to understand that it’s not ok to bite. Have you tried being really firm with her in a strong loud voice when she does this? Or maybe some other say to curtail it while also letting her know you love her. Martin is 3 years old now and I was never sure that he “loved” us but now he snuggles, sleeps with us, sits on our laps, gives us lovey looks and plays fetch (which is usually his idea!). I hope Mimi will come around like Martin did. We love him so much.
Your cat Mimi is perhaps still suffering mentally from the Trauma of her being nearly eaten alive by the fleas. Although, you restored her physical life, her mental being still has to have time to heal and recover. It’s like the soldier who returns from the War with PTSD. Like that soldier you cannot make him well merely by giving him a lot of love, Mimi like that soldier needs her independent “space” in which she will “find” herself while still knowing she is in a safe place of love.
BUT, Give Mimi plenty of space, don’t initiate petting or cuddling. She needs to crave your attention AND she truly needs to feel she is Free within the home, giving her space allowing her to be alone, as if you don’t care, She will begin to seek to want you to Love her.
I once had a Cat whose life I saved as a kitten, she was lying in a huge vacant lot that was infested with all manner of bugs, slugs and every thing thats in the earth. A trash filled lot. She was truly dying. I brought her food that each day she began to slowly eat and the food slowly began a restoration over a period of almost 2/weeks to bring her back to life.
She hung around in my yard, whenever she felt like it, and sometimes on my porch;… for about a month, and I continued to feed her then adopted her into my house as my indoor Cat. She was absolutely cold toward me and would scratch and bite when I tried petting her. So I said, okay, missy have it your way: and for several months totally ignored as if she was not even in the house except for feeding her and providing water. After, about two months she occasionally would scream fo me to come upstairs and give her private attention, because I was always downstairs enjoying the company of my dog or reading. I’d go up and give her about 10minutes maximum, then return downstairs. And in those ten minutes there was no scratching, also no cuddling, she’d just lay beside me on the bed.
Time went on and she craved my attention more while also knowing that she has full freedom and independence of herself in the house. But, also learning that this house and all in it are her world so I guess it finally occurred to her…nothing here to hurt you but you can make it also enjoyable for yourself. And, this human who saved you and feeds you is not trying to own you, not trying to take away your pride of independence that all you felines treasure so much.
AFTER A YEAR SHE BECAME ONE OF THE FAMILY, she still required her independence which I still gave, but the scratching and biting stopped and instead some following me around and a little cuddling began. And she liked the limited petting I began to give her, on her terms. Indeed, she was a Beautiful Cat that I loved but I accepted her own unique individual personality and probably that she would always be a little unusual because of the deathly illness during her babytime of development, as it’s also the most important time with baby humans.
When a baby human is in the crib, just a few months old or less, and perhaps the parents are always violently fighting, that Trauma of the mother seeps into the emotional part of the baby’s brain even though it has no understanding at all of whats going on , the emotional trauma remains and for the next several years during its childhood nightmares can be there constantly repeating fictitious violent drama. I knew such a child who mostly disliked being touched nor cuddled by her mother who also was her sole parent; her parents divorced before she was one year old and during her childhood years she never met her father. Her mother often complained the child did not love her regardless the child actually adored her, but in a quiet non physical way, she worshipped her mother from a distance.
I love your story! My Elvis is always waiting for me at the door wham i get home from work… but whenever i reach down to pick him up or even just to pet him, he runs away. If i pick him up he’s wriggling to get away. If he is sleeping pin the couch and i reach out to stroke him, my arm and hand are under attack…. yes drawing blood sometimes. I am hoping he’ll be more affectionate once he’s been neutered. My previous cat loved being carried around like a baby, so this boy’s aloofness is something new to me. We all adire him tho because he is such a character.
We found our 2 year old boy, Whiskey at our SPCA in Penticton B.C. He is so affectionate. A lap cat which surprised us him being a stray. He is now our boy. Love him so much.
I live in Penticton too, and about 8 weeks ago I adopted 2 Tuxedo boys and a Ginger boy…just reading about Tuxedos, they are unique.
Tuxy is 9 or 10, and Toonie, the Ginger, is 4 and Chippy is 4 and quite uniqe. I noticed he would go right up to strangers and really look at them. They apparently came from a hoarding situation and spent 3 months in the SPCA. They said they’d been in a mobile home near Paris St, about 100 cats.
They took awhile to adjust, I kept them in one large bedroom with a huge window, for about a month.
They are now in the rest of the house, and can be trusted to be alone all night or if we go out. They don’t get into anything….which at first they were climbing all over everything.
My beautiful Norwegian Forest cat Sassy, died the month before…..she was probably 18 or 19.
So a couple weeks after I went to adopt 1 or 2 kitties for my “family” of 2 challenged adults that live with me. The SPCA asked me if I would take all 3 as they were bonded.
They have been a complete joy and it’s hard to believe we have 3 cats. They are really good, and I love seeing them run around the house, chasing each other and play fighting on the carpet in front of me. I am looking for different names as I don’t think the names they came with are really theirs.
I have a tuxie! He is so loving to me! He goes on my bed and cuddles with me so cuteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee im gonna dieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
HE ALSO GUARDS ME
My loss of Bo (lavender point Siamese) December 2015 was unbearable. He had died at only 8 months old a fatal feline disease, FIP. I thought I’d never get over his loss. By May of 2015, I decided I was ready to start looking around. Was thinking of a 1 yo cat from a rescue agency. When we arrived at an SPCA, my daughter fell in love with a 10 week tux kitten who was playing with his toy in the cubicle while his sister stayed hiding in the back corner. The staff brought him out (they had named him George Pawshington) and he was obviously feral by the way he was attempting to hide in open corners. I was convinced we’d give him a try and it was a total success. For the first few hours, he hid under furniture but changed rapidly. He is character and keeps us all on our toes. He never claws the furniture and only needs to be told “no” if he attempts to jump on counter, etc. His funniest trait is he will plop down his body in front of any family member as he/she is walking. When he plops down in front of me, he rolls on his back, legs & arms extended and waits for me to rub his belly. Its only a matter of time before he figures out how to open the front door – it has a handle type of knob. If watching TV, he’ll sleep on top of the couch next to you so he can be close. And his favorite, favorite, favorite toy is the plastic spring; he could keep that for hours if he didn’t keep getting them under furniture. Love the way he never sheds and is so sleek. What a joy he has been and will continue to be for many years.
If I was a cat I’d be a hangin’-out-in-my-underwear cat.
My Martin is very smart. He has been fetching since he was a kitten and continues to initiate it. I’ve never had another cat do that and I’ve had several cats.
My tuxies, Jack & Jill are litter mates that joined our family last year. They are now a little over one year old, and an absolute joy! Jack is a laid back boy that loves absolutely everyone. He loves to be brushed and groomed, and plays and plays until he crashes. Jilly is a little terrorist – she loves our 14 year Maine Coone, Brutus, who tolerates her (just barely!) Our 10 year old Persian, Bella, hates everyone except my husband, and especially the kittens. Jilly is my “Bean” – barely 6 pounds of love! Jack is a little boy, too, at only 10 pounds. (Brutus is 18 pounds!) The cats hear my car pull in the driveway, and are always waiting by the door for their hugs and kisses. There’s nothing better than the unconditional love. These two babies love to sit on my lap and “help” me read. And they love to help clean the house! They are the best, and I don’t remember what things were like before they joined the family.
WOW! That’s all I can say; Except, how wonderful to have all that life and love to enjoy!
My tuxedo cat, kitty cat, has a cape and cowl like Batman. She is 16 years old and is the most affectionate cat I have ever met. I also got her from a rescue shelter as a kitten. She chose me by crawling up my shirt and snuggling against my neck. I am a 40 year old Bachelor who does not keep his condo as clean as possible but kitty cat always keeps her coat immaculate. She is also extremely playful still at her Advanced age. She sure does not act like she’s 80 cat years old.
I just got my tuxedo cat from the rescue shelter . She is so smart and adorable. She able to tap the correct icon on the phone. I have never had a cat of my own. I love this cat soooo much,. You can cuddle with her. I share the cat with my sister who likes to plan with her on the floor and bed. She keeps her coats sparkling clean. She likes to run through the house exploring new thinks. Her partner, who I got at the same time…I thinks that cats origin is Norwiegen forest cat…She is 5 months old.
i lost my beloved tuxedo cat blossom on 7/25/2017. we were together for over 14 years. she was the most beautiful girl in the world. i feel like a part of me died as well. she taught me a lot. blossom taught me that it is ok to love. her bold personality and her no prisoner attitude. she was so very sure of herself. she took no s..t from no one. some of the things she has done has made me laugh through the tears. i rescued a siamese a few months later in 2003. i should say those girls rescued me. they were the best running mates ever. they got along so well. those girls played off of each other. jules passed away in 2003,and i still mourn her. i miss my girls more than anything in the world.
I know how you feel because I never thought I’d recover after my beloved died. But, some years later a Tuxedo cat who lived on the street taught me I could feel the emotion of love again, just a little. That opened the door of hope, just a little, because I’d previously felt dead for those years during my mourning.
This Black/White Tuxedo street Cat visited me everyday on my porch initially because I fed it, but some days he just visited to be in my company and refused to eat the food offered. I liked that because that meant he liked me. And. came just to be with me. He brightened my life for that year with his great friendliness and love. A person down the street owned him but left him outside all the time so the whole street of neighbors fed him. But, he decided to choose to be with me.
I felt loved for the first time in many years. Yes! think Black/White Tuxedos have a gift of love and more than other Cats because I had two Cats in the house for more than 10years who were not affectionate, so I just believed that’s how cats are. But, here this Tuxedo was all love, friendliness and very intelligent, also playful.
I recintly adopted a tux..named her lola.she has been my rock.i have depression an she keeps me smiling and loves on me..loves to give kisses.an hugs..she is so smart.when I’m sitting in a chair she loves to jump on my shoulders an lay around my neck.i truly believe now that she is my true match.
Wow!! This is so awesome! I just went to a shelter and there was a litter of kittens that weee ALL so adorable. There were a couple of orange/cream ones, a white calico that was mostly white (beautiful), and this all black and white one. It was the hardest decision I’ve had to make in a long time. I chose the the mostly white calico and put a hold on her. I couldn’t take her right away because they are only 6 weeks old so I have to wait 4 more weeks or so. Anyways, on the drive home I kept thinking about the black and white one!! He was so chill when I held him. He was just completely relaxed in my arms where as the little beauty queen calico was not. Long story short- I called the shelter on the way home and switched to the all black and white. I got home and googled “all black and white cats” because I was curious if anyone had anything to say about them. I found this article and I am SO HAPPY right now. I feel like I definitely made the right decision. I cannot wait to pick him up now 😁❤️
Thank you to the author of this article and thank you to everyone who posted on here. Now I just have to find a name that is worthy for this little little guy! Any ideas?! 😸
I adopted a tuxedo cat about 4 years ago. At the time I had a friend who was in veterinarian, who told me not to name my cat for a couple weeks because he would name himself. The first day I had him I came out of the bathroom and she was hiding around the corner. She jumped up and scared The Living Daylights out of me. When are we going to the bathroom he would hide behind the shower curtain. Needless to say I named him peekaboo and I call him Boo Boo for short. He’s a very first kind of ever had of my own. He is the sweetest little boy you will ever meet. Everybody that meets him loves him. I took him to a kennel for a weekend that I had to go out of town, they sent me a letter thanking me for bringing him cuz they all loved her so much. He is the most loving animal I have ever met in my entire life. I will never ever have another cat except a tuxedo. I hope he is with me for many years I cannot imagine my life without him.
I definitely know you made the right decision to choose the Tuxedo.
Calico’s indeed have a princess like beauty but, they are prone to be aloof, you intermittently might get some attention from them thru the years, but,…. I had two Calico’s in my life and a true affection never occurred. I loved them,…. but it seems by nature they just did not have the capacity to step outside themselves and give a true affection and certainly never love.
Indeed you made the right choice, the Tuxedo cats seem to have this capacity for Love, sort of doglike in that wonderful capacity; unusual for a feline.
good lord, just a cat… all cats have personalities, can’t just label them because of their color – oh hell, ‘nother subject –
Danette, You are mistaken: I and the other commenters on this site are not lauding the Tuxedo Cat just for his beauty or color. Also, the Cat is called a Tuxedo because of his/her distinctive color design which is usually black/white and looks like the tuxedo garb. This Tuxedo cat continually exhibits distinct wonderful qualities of love and companionship in all it’s many attributes and we are finding that we’ve all experienced these qualities as described. It is a wonderful experience and a gift to life, as love always is. Also, the qualities of the Tuxedo Cat are remarkable for a feline because the average Cat by nature is often aloof. Hence, indeed the Tuxedo Cat is praised.
Truly, there is no need for you to resent our joy that we’ve experienced and want to share with each other.
I have to agree with Tina. I’ve had cats all my life, but the calico we had was the least loving of them all. I’m sure there are exceptions, but it goes with other things I have read about them.
As for tuxedo cats, I think they can vary in affection. The one my parents adopted from the pound was never aaffectionate. But the one my husband and I have is affectionate, but strictly on his terms and only when he’s in the mood. Once or twice a day, he’s in the mood to climb into a lap. On rare occasion he will even give a cat-kiss.
One of our more loving and playful cats was a gray tabby. She was the runt of her litter, but she lived to be almost 23. She would always be up in the window when she heard our car coming home. She would run after, and fetch back wadded up balls of paper. I had fluffy green shearling slippers that she used to love to pounce upon as I walked through the apartment, My husband and I were both students, and whenever we had an open book propped on our chest, reading, she had to jump up and lie across that book, as if to say, I’m HERE, and I want your attention! Now! She was an excellent cuddler. And she had the funniest little trick of sneaking up behind one of us, swatting one of our feet, and then turning away, and acting all innocent, as if to say, “Who, me? Wasn’t me!”
But the most loving and intelligent cat of my lifetime was a certain ginger Maine Coon mix male. He needed to be up in my lap every time I sat down. He was just totally overflowing with love. I miss him.
I have a tuxedo kitten. Well 6 months old:) Her name is Hazel and she is different then my other cats i used to have. She is very sweet. She loves attention and she is a good hunter. She has caught six huge mice for me. i do have a question though. How much can you sell tuxedo kittens for?
Ive never been a cat person but when my tuxie girl came to live with me she was only about 5 wks old. I fell in love with her. Then she had kittens of her own 8 months later and I had NO idea how to mother newborn kittens however it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I fell in love with all 4 of those beautiful little fireballs. Only one though ended up looking just like the mother cat so we kept him and found good homes for the other 3. I still check on them every now again. Now having 2 beautiful tuxies, they have made my husband’s and my life so much fuller. Neither one of us ever though we would get attached to an animal let alone a cat!
Janet, I totally Agree! The Tuxedo Cat’s “divine” qualities of so much love and companionship and friendship, also, completely shocked me in that it’s coming from a Cat. I expect these qualities from a dog. I’ve had several other Cats in my life but none had these qualities to this extant. I loved my other Cats, but the loving character of the Tuxedo I only got from my dog.
Janet you and your husband are truly blessed to have two Tuxedos in your life.
I have a tuxie kitty we believe someone dropped off. He was barely weaned when we found him. He would run under the porch whenever we opened the door. We started leaving the door open and gradually moved a food dish from the porch to inside. It didn’t take long to tame him down and within 24 hours couldn’t get him off my lap. When I found out he was a male I said ,”oh! Your a mister!” The name Mister has stuck with. He follows me all over the house including the bathroom. Quite often when I’m in the tub, he would sit on the toilet stool. Eventually he started using it! After 9 months we no longer had a litter box in the house. If someone is in the bathroom with the door closed he will meow at the door to go outside if he has to go.We have now had Mister 7 years. We celebrate our birthdays together since the day I tamed him was my birthday! He gave me the most precious gift ever! Himself with his loving caring affectionate personality!Although he will sit in daddy’s lap if I’m busy, He is mommas Mister!❤
OMG! Wow, these Tuxedos are also So Very smart. He chooses to use the toilet instead of his litter box…..
Umm/Umph! What a little “person” he is. I truly wonder at the unique character of the Tuxedo…how did it come about? It’s not even breed; as humans have purposely developed some cats into specific breeds.
My Tuxie has no personality traits of the breed
My tuxedo cat Spenser passed away in April at the age 15. He coloration was that of a traditional tuxedo cat, but his mamma was Siamese and Spenser had the long and slender build and crook at the end of his tail. His voice was undoubtedly that of a Siamese cat. Several times when taking a howling Spenser to the vet, the desk staff, without being able to see into the cat carrier, would say to me “did you get a Siamese cat”.
my tuxedo cat was abandoned a coupled of months ago in her crate in the parking lot of a church in the Kansas City MO area. My daughter claimed her for me, and I drove from the West Des Moines area to get her. I wish I knew more about her background. I’m sure she was indoor cat, declawed and spayed, and vet said well cared for, probably two or three years old but possibly as old as five. She was a trooper on the drive home in her carrier w/o a peep. She is unlike any cat I’ve had in the past. Most just wanted to love and be loved. She is a nipper and takes great glee in biting my calf as i’m walking by or attacking and biting my toes. I’ve used the water bottle to little avail; it’s still worth it to her to get a bite and run. She has broken the skin once and I’m slow to think these are ‘love bites.’ She will let me pet her briefly and then she strikes with her sharp teeth. Only twice she crawled in my lap uninvited; she never responds to invites/coaxing. She often sleeps next to me and did from the second night. She has an attitude for sure. I like her spunk! Just wish I knew her history. If I disguise my voice, it frightens her immensely so I’m careful to always keep an even, chatty tone with her. If I’m angry (never at her), it scares her. The vet says her markings are unique: white nose with black heart shaped nostrils. I thought she was older and ‘graying’ but the vet said all those white hairs mixed in her black are ‘guard hairs.’
There are no other animals here. I am almost 80 years old, and it’s just us girls. She greets my guests but the rare times there was a man in the house, she stayed under the bed. Yet she was very friendly with a man at the church where she was abandoned. She doesn’t stand for breakfast to be postponed but will let me go back to bed once she is fed. My tux if very long; maybe they all are. The vet liked her weight at 8 1/2 lbs and instructed me to give her 1/4 C dry food twice a food. Even 1/2 C was not enough. She literally nagged with her loud Meows ’til I read she need an ounce of food for every pound. She mellowed out after that. When we play she is a HOOT. Early on I named her Pippin and now she is PIPPIN THE HOOT. The cold Iowa winter will be warmer because of her.
Karen, read up on the particular issues that a de-clawed Cat has. The declawing is probably what makes the Cat so neurotic, even that noise startles her is a characteristic often mentioned to occur in a declawed Cat.
Declawing is a horror for a Cat to go through also very painful and the discomfort continues after surgery for a long time, which is understandable since they have to cut off the tip of each digit along with the nail. For a person to declaw a Cat is a cruelly savage and inhumane thing to do, similar to someone cutting off your hands.
The cat knows something has been horribly changed about itself and is constantly aware that it’s missing its claws, a very important component of its identity as a self. It also knows that its ability to properly defend itself is lost. Hence, the biting, and the fright from hearing noise or the abrupt unusual change in your voice; all these aberrant behaviors are major effects from the mutation.
Information about the negative effects of declawing will also give you guidance on how to fix these consequential personality dysfunctions that you’ve mentioned.
Dear Katie,
I live in Mitchellville, Iowa & Seen your from W. des moines.
I’am on my 2nd Tuxedo cat & wanted to know if I should have my 6 month male fixed ? I thought that my old 1 was perfect & had him fixed , but This 1 is the most perfect Tux I have ever seen. Do U know if he will pass on his perfect Genes if I breed him to anouther Tux ????
Thank U, Jerry Butler
Sweet, a few years ago…I opened my front door, there was a tuxi cat seating on my porch meowing. I thought he was a stray, I have three kids wasn’t my intentions to own a cat at the time… Well he wouldn’t go away, infact he would follow us every where we walked and sit and wait for us to come out. He would wait at my door till I come home. Recently I took him to Alley cats, found out he was microchiped, already fixed, named Niel… Owner didn’t want him, so I put him in my name, and now cat lives with us, so basically yes this intelligent cat adopted this family. We love Niel.
I have been adopted by an adorable tuxie called Tommy. He came from a rescue centre and has brought so much love into my life at a time when i needed it the most.We always cuddle up at night and i find stroking him whilst i drift off so relaxing.I never thought i was a cat person but now i am a devoted crazy cat lady and despite horrendous vet bills for many medical problems i couldnt imagine my life without him.He was my 50th birthday present and as he is 14 years old i know he wont be around forever so i love each moment we spend together and make the most of it.
Lesley, you are wise…Absolutely treasure each moment with your Cat. Tommy is indeed a divine gift to you.
I was searching for information on my black and white or should I say there was this cat in the neighborhood Who was homeless so I fed her everyday even in the winter when it was so very cold last year she still would not come to me. Then all of a sudden she just came to me and started rubbing against my legs. So she adopted me LOL I’m allergic to cats so I never pictured myself ever owning one. But I swear she is the smartest cat ever! She says hello to me whenever I come home she says hello to me every morning. And she loves to go where she’s not supposed to. I’ve been meaning to take her to the doctor I hope she’s not pregnant. I just don’t know how she spent the whole winter last year outside and survived! A smart cat indeed!
I rescued a litter of kittens in New Orleans a little over a year ago. Their mother was part Tonkinese. I have read that this breed of cat is very relaxed and affectionate. My boyfriend and I kept Two Kitties for ourselves. When is tiger striped with black paws and then there is my tuxedo; Pancho (His Father is Mexican – he is named for Pancho Villa.) I love them both but we often say that Pancho is going to be a doctor when he grows up while Tony the Tiger is going to be a gambler and a Ramblin Man. Their personalities are so different. My tuxedo Kitty is so calm, intelligent and has such a sly sense of humor. I am curious if it is the tuxedo in him where the Tonkinese that brings out these traits. Any thoughts?
I love my Fatgirl! She is a Tuxie, a rescue & very smart! She knows words! I can say, “bug” and she looks to the ceiling. I can say, “bird” and she looks out the window. She knows what a puppy dog and & a kitty cat. I ask he if she wants tuna fish and she answers me and goes straight to the kitchen. Ha ha ha!!! I do love her but once rescued, evidently something terrible happened to her because she is real skiddish and i have had her for 10 yrs, she wont go outside because she is afraid, she doesnt like to be held & and she is definitely NOT pet friendly. But she is amazing and i love her so!!!!
yep same way but I only had my cat for 10 months
My tuxie is a boy cat and I love him sooo much if only I knew what date he was born because where I live there is all kind of cats running around in the summer that have kittens they have over 3 or 4 litters in 5 months .I know that he was born in July but what day so I had to estimate. sooo ya he was born 2017.
I love my tuxedo- he’s a Maine Coon, but boss of the house sadly no, he’s the one that gets picked on :(. He’s 12. I say he’s my first impulse kitten. I went to the rescue to adopt a different kitten and ended up going home with 2!! Couldn’t resist all his crazy white whiskers in his little black face.
Hello Heather when I choose my baby kitty from four brothers. He was a black and white and his three brothers were gray. The reason I choose him was be cause he let out a cry and then I held him and I new that he was the one. I choose the name Clancy. After the writer Tom Clancy. I’m part Irish on my dads family. Clancy loves to be petted, purrs a lot, squeeks like a mouse doesn’t meow, love to drink water by using his paws, and he cries until you make your bed with his help. He will be eleven years old this year. He’s my only furry baby. Melissa
Ew
Melissa, indeed I can feel the love! Your blessed.
Reading the comments below has me in tears! Wanted to share my own Kitty story. Always been a dog person and never had a cat before but am a huge animal lover in general. A couple years ago a stray gray and white tuxie started showing up at my apartment. I noticed he had his ear clipped and was neutered and I started feeding him. He wasn’t well and by the looks of his grayish yellow snaggle tooth I figured he was pretty old. He became a daily visitor and was more interested in getting petted than eating, even though he was clearly hungry. He slept in a little dog house on my apartment patio. I wanted to move him into my apartment with me but I have a herding breed dog and thought it would be disastrous. One day I was taking my dog out for a walk and Kitty would not budge from the front door. I thought “well, someone will learn a lesson…” and took my dog outside. Kitty did not run off and Nugget didn’t chase him, but just sniffed and even started grooming him. Cutest thing ever! I decided at that point that when I moved out from my apartment and into my house Kitty would be coming with me. 1.5 years and an FIV and Leukemia diagnosis later and Kitty is the happiest house cat ever. He is the sweetest, funniest, most well mannered and just overall easy pet I’ve ever had. He and Nugget are great friends and love to lay in the sun that comes in through the window together. I knew when I adopted him that our time together would be limited because of his diagnoses but he is doing so great, I think what he needed was just to be loved and cared for and every day I’m sooooo glad he found me. <3
We just lost our 14 1/2 year old tuxedo. His name was BB. It’s been 4 days and it’s very sad. My husband and I are heartbroken. We’re seniors and and we started over 20 yrs ago now. So we never had children together of our own. BB was our fur baby. I’ve never been a cat person. Only doggies. But BB has converted me big time. He got very sick. We didn’t want him to suffer any more. Neither my husband or myself have never had to make that decision before. I’m having a difficult time. BB was the best little buddy ever. He gave us unconditional love, greeted Mommy and Daddy when we would come home, being so excited that we did. He would try to stow away in our luggage when we would go away for travel. I could go on and on, but I’m sure you all know exactly what I’m talking about. All your stories are comforting thank you.
BB we love you and miss you so much!!
Thank you Katie, what a super great story! I was so glad every thing turned out good. And, great how your dog accepted the cat, that was so wonderful of the dog because allowed the cat a home. It’s just wonderful how animals can be so “humane” far surpassing we humans relationship with each other.
Bridget, I’m so sorry for you and your husband’s loss. I know the hurt is extremely painful because I’ve been through that painful mourning. But, after a long time I did discover its true what others say, that the memories are comforting and still provide some of the richness. Ironically I hid initially from the memories because the missing was so painful but now my memories of my beloved and the times we shared together bear a pleasant fruit for and into my life.
My wife and I were adopted by Miss Kitty, a “Tux”, about seven years ago when she showed up on our back porch and refused to leave! We had to give her food and water once we realized she wasn’t going anywhere. Since my wife is allergic to cats, Miss K has always been an outside cat but she doesn’ t seem to mind, and she never wanders off too far. I built her a fine brick home which she loves–especially in cold weather–and she loves to interact with us when we sit in the porch swing. We had always been dog folk until our nine year old Yorkie died of cancer, and we swore off pets for good; it was just too painful. Miss K came along at the perfect time, she was in need and we needed something to fill the void left by the passing of our Yorkie. She is smart, affectionate, cuddly, and the perfect companion for a couple in their mid 60s.
This list is perfect and 100% accurate
I lost my tuxedo cat 2 weeks ago to a blood clot that paralyzed the entire back half of her body. She was wonderful . Very smart. So sweet. Now when I think of a replacement I would only get a black and white
They can be trained as well. I had one ride in a semi truck with me for years. Best guard animal i ever had and he went nose to nose with the Border Guard and they backed down. And yes, he kept me warm at night on those cold Minnesota winters. He still cuddles up next to me as an old man.
That’s great Andre! You’ve had and its wonderful that you continue to have this loving partnership at this time in your life when love and companionship from a true friend become even more essential. And, I love your cat he sounds like a wonderful “person” to know.
My tuxedo came from the pub and he loves to meow and he’ll talk to you when you meow back.
He also has the cutest little shirt and he’s extremely greedy
My cat Leo really beleives that he is a Lion. The sad part, is he had a tuxie sister, and her name was Sox. Unfortanetly, Sox is no longer here, and for the first week, Leo Mourned. Im not joking, he would full out cry, and go looking for her. He also is everything in these descriptions! He has a blue elephant he is very protective of, and always has sunday snuggles. He is also a great model. He posed in our old barn, and on the fourth of july, he posed under a pile of confetti. He has a bunch of personality. And lets not forget his famous butt wiggle. He is an outdoor cat, and loves to hunt, and then bring me his dead or alive catch to show off.
yo i got a 9 yr old tuxie. so smart! I there was something special about him. #tuxiegang
woow very nice article
tuxedo cats rock they are loving and cute
My tabby cat named Kitty passed away a month ago. I had him for 15years, I’m 25…more than half my life. It has been so hard for me lately. I cry all the time. I found a tuxedo cat in the street about a week ago. I fed her and made her a house for the outside, cause she kept coming everyday. She let me pet her and was so affectionate. I have a 2 year old cat already named Hazel and she is great but she is very reserved. Kitty was affectionate and would lick me and cuddle and Hazel doesn’t do that. So when I saw how affectionate this Tuxedo cat was, I had to take her in! I named her Midnight and she is the sweetest cat in the world. I think about Kitty everyday and miss him so much but deep inside I know he sent Midnight to me. Joanne, from Brooklyn NY
My Tuxedo cat, Bambam passed a few months back. He passed of old age. I’m 15 and if had him since I was three. He was the nicest and most caring cat ever. I loved him with all my heart and he was the best cat ever.
I love tuxedos they are sooo sweet
I love my tuxedo cat, TopCat! He’s an awesome and super-friendly companion. He’s just a joy to be around.
Does anyone know where the study is that claims tuxedo’s are 200% smarter? Just curious and would like a citation. We love our 17 year old tuxedo cat Soxy <3
Appreciated everyone’s sharing. Charlie is my precious tuxedo that I rescued when he was 8. Now at the age of 15, he has been diagnosed with renal failure/carcinoma. How blessed to have him in my life. Just wanted to leave a tribute along with all of your tributes.
My name is Michael G. Gabriel. I am a disabled combat veteran. I have a tuxedo kitty (Jazzman) , whose markings are perfectly symmetrical. I’m sorry, but I’m absolutely certain that I have the most intelligent, beautiful, humoris, conversive, loving kitty in the world. JAZZMAN feels the same way. Much love to you all……… Gabe and Jazz
If only we could post images.
Po (his name earned after two months with me, short for potato, couch potato), came to me. Surprised to see him, I invited him in and he never left. He was at least a year old, he had balls, and his ears were frost bit and shortened from a hard winter the year before. Most neighbors love him. I’ve been told he’s everybody’s friend. He kind of is, except for the meth twins next door. They are a potential, unpredictable threat to him, a concern of mine. We go on walks together. No leashes or harnesses. We walk together. He’s the best. Huge black bow tie on his white chest. Asymmetrical face. Black nose. He’s a climber. A hunter. A warm fuzzy. He’s a good dude.
My Tuxedo cat is named Romeo & I have a funny true story about his name. I originally wanted to call him “Romeo” bc he was so loving and cuddly as wee kitten but my boyfriend was like …no that’s a lame name so we called him “Boots” 😾 He never responded when called & I had him tested to see if he was deaf which he wasn’t. On his 1year Bday I was talking to him about his name …asking him why he wouldn’t come to me when I called him & told him I had wanted to name him “Romeo” & not “Boots”. His ears perked up & he turned to look at me EVERYTIME I called him “Romeo”…no response when i said “Boots”. Needless to say his name is now officially “Romeo” & he comes to me EVERYTIME I call him. True story! Question: Do tuxies tend to be bow-legged? Romeo is in his back legs & he has this adorable gait when walking away from you…..he is just so precious in all his ways 😻😻😻😻😻😻😻
My cat is so sassy there is no beating around that bush, but she is very particular with people she loves me but when to many people are around she will go to my room and hide. I just love her so much she is such a character. She is an inside/outside cat and loves to bring us gifts on our doorstep. ❤️❤️❤️🐱🐱🐱
I am acquiring a 1 year old female Tuxie today…Sasha! I am soooo excited to meet her! Her human was severely injured in an accident and had to relocate to a place that doesn’t accept fur babies. I have a sweet, vivacious 2 year old silver tabby girl, my Luna, who needs a sister and playmate. I pray they connect. Bother are spayed and have big personalities….any advice? I’ve tried having multiple indoor girls before and it didn’t fare well for my older Tortie at the time and l had to re-home them.
I JUST GOT A BABY TUXIE A COUPLE WEEKS AGO AND HES SO PLAYFUL AND HIS PURRS ARE THE BEST AND HES MY FIRST CAT ALTHOUGH HE ACTS VERY GAY I STILL LOVE HIM LOL >:3
My boyfriend was living with a friend at his friends house. I had issues with my room mate so I ended up moving in. We lived in the country and we took in a kitten that was just dropped off and we had a dog. The kitten was accepted by the dog. During the summer when I sat outside on the porch and I would hear this kitten. I couldn’t see him just hear it, I would leave dry food at the end of the porch hoping he would come upon the porch. One day I walked out and seen him eating but it ran when it seen me. I decided to sit outside with the food hoping he would come to me. After a few weeks he would come up and eat when I was there, but stay his distance. I would move the food everyday closer to me and eventually he started to trust me, but would take off when someone else would come out. He started to feel safe with me and would hang out with me. He got use to the guys but you can tell he still was scared around them. He wasnt a kitten that wanted to be held, I kept trying but he didn’t like it. Winter was coming and I couldn’t just leave him out in the cold. I picked him up and took the chance of bringing him in the house because it was cold that night. The dog and the cat was very curious to see him. I always think back I could of been ripped to shreds by the cat because I didnt wrap him up in a towel. He was calm and didnt try to jump out of my arms. The other kitten wasn’t liking it and stalking his every move. The dog was fine with the cat. By the next day the kittens were bestfriends, it was just great! The kitten was very attached to me I guess he knew I saved him. My guy and I moved and I took him with us, I didn’t want to separate them, but he was so close to me. I would call his name (I named him oreo because he was black with white) and he would come all the time he loved giving me kisses and I loved it too. It was the first time I ever had a cat because I’m allergic to them, but I didnt care he was worth the runny nose and red eyes. It was weird eventually it was just a stuffy nose, but I didn’t care he was worth it. Recently we had to lay him to rest, he was only 1 1/2 yrs old. He was always with me followed me everywhere. I am not a well person I have CHF and would get fluid on my body it was like he knew that and always showed how much he loves me, and I loved him big time and so did my guy. It was like he was trying to make sure I was always ok, it was like he had a little human inside him. He would always say hello when I said it to him, and when I go to feed him he sounded like he was saying mom. I few months ago found out my heart was pumping 10%. They were talking about a heart transplant. I was hospitalized twice 1 week and then again for another week. Oreo was going crazy without me not being there. He would cry and just sit at the door and just wait. When I talked to my guy I would have him put me on speaker and the cat would come running to look for me. This is the weird thing 3 weeks ago he started to go into a choking fit at least once a day. My guy said he probably has a hair ball, he didnt went to eat his food. He loved temptation treats so I gave him some, and he threw it up. well I noticed his breathing was getting heavy and he started to stay away. I would call him and he would come to me but he wouldn’t give kisses and didnt want to face me. I said to my guy I m calling the vet in the morning. We had a 10:45 appointment and he stayed in the kitchen for a bit we tried to feed him he just liked the gravy. Then he left the kitchen and went into one of the bedrooms. He was laying against the wall when I looked in the room from the kitchen table he was just watching me. I know I was starting to slowly fill up with fluid again a few weeks ago, but it stopped. I was going to call my Dr. And tell them I needed to take my water pills everyday not every other. I realized I started to lose the fluid when about Oreo started to choke. We had xrays done for Oreo his whole body was filled with fluid and he was drowning and dying. He had heart disease, I had my ekg today and my heart is pumping 35% now. I just don’t understand this at all I am questioning why this happened. He was hiding it from me he didnt want me to know how bad it was. My guy didn’t know if he could be in the room when he passed, but I didn’t want him to go without one of us there. My guy stayed he just couldn’t walk away, was gone in a few seconds and it was one of the worse things we had to deal with. We are still crying and just can’t get over what happened him being so young. My friend said they are known to be magical and just maybe he took some of your sickness away. I don’t question anything in life, even though I doubt it. Young children get cancer and other things so it happens. I had him cremated and a little box engraved with his name. One of the worse things packing up all his toys, and seeing his presents under the Christmas tree. He was very spoiled and we gave him a great life even though it was very short. He definitely didn’t deserve this, his love was so felt. Where we live now I never even seen a cat around here as we were in the kitchen today we both looked at each other because we both heard him meow. I hope that was a sign he was ok..boy I miss my little guy so much, my heart is so broken.
Our Tuxedo cat is just phenomenal.
Our cat is teratorial, if he likes an item it is his.
But affectionate YES!
Sometimes he acts like a cat dog🤩😘💯
We call him , he likes a whistle sound.
He likes when you call him when you perk your lips and call like a dog
, go figure.
He is just the feline he is, our baby is
12 years old.
Bathing is another situation=_=
I rescued a tuxedo male cat that was 3 years old. I named him Sylvester after the cartoon cat. He is my best friend. I am a senior citizen, live alone, and this cat gives me so much love, joy, and happiness. His black and white markings are beautiful. He sleeps with me every night and takes naps with me too. He does require food in his bowl at all times and fresh daily clean water. He feels more secure that way. What a wonderful blessing Sylvester is.
I have two kittens named Jeff and Tuxedo!
Thanks to everyone who has shared his or her “Tuxie” experience. I’m still learning about Tuxies. In 2018, I wanted to get a second cat – mostly to keep Rosie company when I had to be away. Rosie was 4 at the time. I went to our animal shelter. They had all of their kittens in a small room lined with “pigeon hole” boxes for the kittens. While looking at other kittens, this little black and white fella’ kept walking over and standing on my left Nike. I looked at him, picked him up, and returned him to his cubby hole. He wasn’t what I was looking for. This happened two more times. The third time, a light went off. This little guy is trying to tell me something. Fortunately, I was aware enough to take notice of his behavior. I didn’t know it at the time, but he was behaving exactly the way a Tuxie should. He was standing on my tennis shoe but touching my heart. I scooped him up, made a donation, and brought him home. Rosie was nuts about him and was a wonderful second Mom. It was clear almost immediately that he really looked up to and loved her. Rosie reciprocated in kind. Because of his behavior at the shelter, I named him (what else) “Buddy”. Not original but very descriptive. I’ve owned cats for over 40 years. Buddy, now 2 years old, is unlike any other (and I’ve been blessed with some pretty terrific cats along the way). He is incredibly affectionate, playful and athletic (he jumps after and catches things thrown into the air unlike any cat I’ve ever shared my cat house with). He simply doesn’t miss. His nervous system won’t allow it. He bunts me all of the time (which I love). Even though biased, I think he is truly a very intelligent little guy. Needless to say, I thank my lucky stars that little Buddy has come into my life. Rosie does, too. If you have never owned a Tuxie, but have a chance to, I suggest that you do yourself and a Tuxie a huge favor and adopt one. You will never, ever regret it.
COOLEST CAT-DOGS EVER! check this out (Reeboks- see below)…
2 years ago I rescued a tux named Bella. I wanted to change her name to Love Bug. She came up to EVERY person who entered the room at the shelter (9 cats in that room- she gets along with everyone), including the hyperactive 1.5 and 7 yr olds we brought with us. We put a deposit on her right away while we looked for another cat. Everyone is very amazed at how Intelligent, animated, dog-like and involved she is. She is Velcro- always on me, super loving. When she talks (often) she uses intonation- asks questions and gives comments.
I previously had a tux for almost 19 yrs. There will NEVER be another Reeboks (Ree). He was a complete anomaly. The coolest animal I have ever had. He played racquetball with me, fetch, keep away, etc. Mostly, he wanted to play hide n seek. He would come whap me on my leg (you’re it!!) then go run and hide. When I found him I’d push him over and go hide. He would wander through the house looking in, around and under everything calling and calling for me hen hit me again n run off. He could do this forever.
He also had a game with our local bluejay called …now you see/now you don’t. He would come up and peek over the window sill then dive down out of sight. The jay would get up in the
I was so jazzed to find people saying these traits were tux common. I needed someone intree to get a better vantage point and still, Ree would play games with him. The jay would perch by the window and they would get into a staring contest with the jay screaming.. He drive that poor thing so nuts that the bird would fly up n ram itself into the window trying to get to Ree (he was indoor only). It was so hard I seriously hought it was going to break the window and get into the house to beat the cat up! Ree would HUG me, like legit hug me. And there’s so much more. He also scored a home because he was then a kitten dtanding up with his paws against the glass people-watching as if we were the exhibit! He picked us out for sure and who could say no to that!?? I wasn’t looking for an animal. Good thing because I found a bff instead. When he passed I was never so heartbroken. Best 18.5 yrs of my life. Gave up everything in the divorce for him. Yup, even the new house. I got the bettter deal anyhow.
I needed someone in my life and I believe in fate and fate is what I got. I got Bella!! I assumed she was definitely someone’s baby because of who/how she was and probably just got lost. She was dropped off by someone else who harboured her inside- did I mention she apparently JUST had babies and they most likely died because of that stupid woman?? 😡. But hearing all these things and stories now… I believe that maybe, she’s everyone’s baby. Because she’s a tuxie! 💓
Omygosh. Thanks for bringing that up. Jeez Bella could make any mid-air catch pro team. Never ever seen a cat do that. Totally like a dog with a frisbee! Cool, right? And fast as a whip on bug patrol too. *confused: She only eats the flies tho and doesn’t eat salmon, huh??
So is being a pro jumper part of a tuxedo profile?
Reading all these beautiful and sad memories had me crying uncontrollably, I to had a wonderful Tuxedo cat named Tom, he was so special to me,
and when I had to have him put down because of urinary track disease it just killed me inside, he was such a young cat at the time and had many happy years
ahead, but like all the reply’s in this post know it was the humane thing to do, but I never stop thinking of him, even though its been many years since he’s gone.
All cats are special, but tuxedo cats, well there is something even more special about them as so many owners know, he was apart of my family not just a pet, but the bond we had I never experienced with any other cats I had growing up.
I even have long time friends whom I’m still in contact with that still remember Tom, and even still say to this day “wow that cat was so cool, friendly and so smart” and he even liked to hang out with us guys, like one of the guys.
Thanks for the memories and a good cry,
big Love to all cats.
My husband found a three-week-old tuxedo cat in our backyard two days ago. It looked like it had been abandoned — what do we know, we never let any of our cats have a litter. This little baby came right up to me and I thought, hmm, this kitty is special. My two older girls are 14 & 15 & they greeted me the same way the first time we saw each other. Reading your article, I would say, YES! I have a tuxedo cat! His name is Barnaby — Midsomer Murders, anyone? — and he is a snuggler from day one. He follows me around the house. He is adorable and for my husband to say that, you know it is the cream of the crop. Taking care of his poor goopy eyes with antibiotics — which is going away quickly, thank goodness, I am bottle feeding him for now, teaching it how to use the litter box, and introducing the girls to him. Both hissed at him, which I expected. My older, super territorial cat is much more subdued than my “they call me mellow yellow” Turkish van. We love him already.
A year ago a little Tuxedo kitty came into our lives.Though we already had 4 cats …he was so sweet and fun that I fell in love with him. We took him to the vet where he was neutered and had all his shots. Did we ever epect to have 5 cats? Usually 3 was my limit…but I am now at The Limit!!!! His name is Goatee as he has a goatee under his chin which adds to his cute and endearing face. I always had tabby’s but now I have A calico, one red tabby,a torti, a small long haired Tabby ,and now a TUxEDO…Holy Moly!!!
I loved my tuxedo so I can really understand the pain of losing yours. I used to teach my tuxedo to watch the birds from the window and he did. I would holler nasty, they are nasty. He would come running looking out he window for them. when he saw them he would start chattering. Then I hollered bug, there bugs. He come running. again to catch the bug. Then I would point to the celling crying bug. He try to get the fly. My tuxedo and myself would be trying to hit the bug at the same time. I miss him. He was blocked and I didn’t know it. I asked the vet how. she said, some cats just get block from the food, or being sprayed or nurtured. I believe he got blocked because he had crystals in his urine and the vet refused antibiotics or the remedy to fix the problem. He died shortly afterwards. I wish I would have acted earlier to deal with it, but when I found out it was too late. I truly miss him and he will always have a piece of my heart. I also cried 4 months straight everyday, but now I do feel better. I wanted to do something good for future pets, so I developed a fund for them. I’m building it every month. To help pets that are really sick and dying. Its my way of giving back. I hope all will do the same thing too. It does help with the pain and sadness.
I have had 2 Tuxies, the first one, called Smudge, was a typical black and white male Tuxie. He lived til he was 18. Losing him broke our hearts, but 10 years ago, a young Tuxie Street cat hung around our area for months. No one knew where he came from, contacted charities and vets but seemed no one lost him. Seems he was dumped. Most neighbours shared feeding him and let him sleep in their houses but after a while, he seemed to choose us. He stopped going anywhere else so finally we decided to keep him. Took him to vet, he was vaccinated and neutered and vet said he was 1 or 2 years old. He is definitely the boss in our house. We called him Benny as Benny from top cat. We should have called him TC, as that’s what he became. He is well known as the local boss cat. All the local dog walkers know him and say their dogs shy away if they pass our house and he’s sitting outside. No other male cat dare come near but he seems to be having a relationship with the little Calico female nearby. They often sit together and seen them rubbing noses. Although he’s the boss, he’s extremely affectionate, still playful and loves his food. Vet says he’s not overweight though. He has brought us a lot of smiles and likes to snuggle up to me or my husband many times. Only when he wants to though. He meows when he wants something, purrs when we stroke him and he’s unbelievably clever. I love him so much.
I adopted my Tuxedo 6 months ago and truly love him . He is very smart I have leash trained him and he goes out on the patio daily. He’s the talk of my apartment complex all the kids love and ask to take him for a walk. Dexter understands the words: No, supper, treats and bed time. He also understands if mommy makes a funny noise when he tries to put his claws into the screen. He has his own rocker recliner, talk about spoiled. He just turned 2 so I have many years ahead with my boy.
I already have a tuxedo cat his name is ziggy! He’s so cute!
My tuxedo cat Nehlo perished one night in a tragic garage door accident. Buried him that night under a lit sky under both Saturn & Jupiter.
I soon found a tuxedo kitten that was such an exact match of him that I named him Nehlo2. Right off the bat he took over ever personality trait of his predecessor, accurately. I’ve never even realized he had gone because of this.
At this time Nehlo is about 5 years old. Each & every day when he 1st sees me, he clearly & confidently says “hello”. I’m not sure he understands that hello is meant to be said just once but he certainly understands that it is an opening contact word. I’ve always talked to him & at this point we can carry on an entire conversation in English without fail. Not unlike a child his attention span may wander. I certainly can’t just jump out at him with a camera recording & expect good material either. He knows what the camera is & he is private I guess. I can though ask him to hold still & please smile, he will hold his face straight & look into the camera till I get my picture. I always show him after.
This is not to say that I haven’t gotten are talks on video plenty of times & shown a couple people whom did not believe me.
Examples of what he says: hello, hi, out, huh?, no (defiantly), says the names of other pets, mom, (this one a lot – he loves my wife for some reason)
When I am leaving & tell him I’ll be right back he says – “how long?” I tell him an estimate. Then he usually squints his eyes with a smile nodding his head as if to say ok, or yes.
Just last week he said “how long, hour?”…. it just blows my mind. I mean this is a special, special little soul
my cat is a tuxedo cat he is so cute and fat. Lol
I love my Spike. He is a most purfect boy. But I wonder if anyone has experienced this. He loves his sister Coco and he’s quite possessive if other cats come around. She is very chill, a tabby/Siamese mix and they’re always wrapped up in each other. But he doesn’t like other kitties
My kids had been begging me for years to get a pet but our deposit is ridiculous. We found a tuxedo in a PetSmart that we wanted but didn’t have the money at the time. A few weeks later, we found one on Facebook who was found behind a Subway store, he was flea ridden and scared when we picked him up and he had worms, but we got him back to good in no time. He can be a brat but he’s usually very loving and sweet. He loves my heating pad and my asiago cheese bagels. He’s very playful and funny. He gets the zoomies alot and runs around like a lunatic, lol. He likes being held like a baby if he’s sleepy and we usually find him at the bottom of the stairs by the front door when we get home. He’s definitely made his way into our hearts, My little cuddle bug Toluse .
I have a Tuxedo boy named Twinkle toes. He looks like he’s wearing a pair of white gloves. I think he is a deep thinker, sometimes he’ll be looking at you as if he’s trying to figure you out. The cutest think is he loves to be petted. When you stop petting him he bats you hand with his hand till you start petting him again. I was once in bed TRYING to get me to pet him. When I covered both my arms, he started batting my face!
My tuxie, Emma Sue is a weird gray and white tuxie who is a smart, lazy, energetic spitfire. She is always waiting to add to the list of dead mice. That’s my Emmie.
